KICK ASS 2 IS COMING, SET TO BEGIN PRODUCTION SEPTEMBER

IGN broke the news today in this article:

Matthew Vaughn is in talks with Universal to bring Kick-Ass 2 to the studio. The first film was distributed by Lionsgate.

Heat Vision reports that Vaughn has "handpicked" Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down) to direct the film, which is of course based on the Mark Millar-John Romita, Jr. comic series. Vaughn scripted and will produce the follow-up -- but not direct as he did on the original -- as he's no doubt busy with X-Men: First Class 2.

Kick-Ass 2 will be based on the comic-book miniseries of the same name as well as the spinoff book Hit-Girl, which hits next month.

Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass), Chloe Moretz (Hit-Girl) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Red Mist) are all expected to return for the sequel, which has a September production start set.

COMIC SPOTLIGHT: SCARLET SPIDER

“All of the power, none of the responsibility.”

Spider-Man is an icon in pop culture; there is no question about it. He is an everyday guy, one of the working class who has more downs than ups in his life, but has the heart of a hero. The infamous words from his Uncle Ben are like a code to live by: “with great power comes great responsibility.” But…what if he didn’t have that responsibility? Enter the Scarlet Spider.

Ah, if you're a Spider-Man fan, you know the name: the much criticized “spider-clone” from the 90’s, with a blue hoodie and useless pockets strapped to his ankles. The Scarlet Spider then was Ben Reilly, a clone of Peter Parker. This time it’s someone totally different: it’s the clone of Peter Parker under the mask…wait, what? Not that clone, this time the mantle belongs to Kaine, the imperfect, slowly dying murderous clone from the Clone Saga that met his end some time ago. I know, it makes no sense, but hear me out.

The title focuses on Kaine, who is now cured of his illness and has received a new lease on life. Residing in Houston, Texas, Kaine tries to make a new start, but he can’t overcome old habits; like beating people half to death. He’s trying, but like the saying goes, old habits die hard. The tagline of the book is “All of the power, none of the responsibility”, which is very fitting after reading the debut issue. Even though he has the spider abilities, he is no Spider-Man. The book starts with a bang, and doesn’t let go of the reader’s attention until the very end. Christopher Yost handles the writing chores, and with having a lot of experience in the Marvel Universe from his work on various X-books, the title is in good hands.

The art is courtesy of Ryan Stegman, who shows he is a breakout superstar artist on the rise. I have followed Stegman’s works from way back when he was with the UK publisher Markosia, where he delivered some of the most eye catching, mood evoking art I’ve seen, to his more recent run in the Amazing Spider-Man. Stegman’s artwork is vibrant and lively, bringing a feel like that of the late Mike Wieringo, which is definitely a good thing.

The book is a solid debut, sure to bring readers to see what this “Spider-Man” of Texas is all about. I highly recommend Scarlet Spider #1, giving it a perfect @@@@@ of out 5. Go pick this up while you still can; it’s at comic stores now! For more information on the Scarlet Spider, visit Marvel Comics online at www.marvel.com.

KABOOM! MAGAZINE TOP 10 BREAKOUT SHOWS OF 2012

In 2011, Cable TV Shows took kinda a huge dip in the ratings amongst audiences in America, Reboots tanked (Charlie Angels), Hit shows took their final bow (Entourage), and some shows just made you want to go out, buy a gun, and put it to your head (MTV). Every new year brings new opportunities to redeem yourself for past mistakes, and in 2012….TV Shows have some very pleasing new opportunities. Kaboom! Magazine would like to preview 10 breakout shows that will have you calling your roomates to make sure they set the DVR in 2012. Here are the top 10 breakout shows of 2012……

10. Jane By Design (ABC Family)

This show will follow a long line of great shows like Pretty Little Liars and Secret Life of A American Teenager for ABC Family. After being mistaken for an adult, the 16-year-old Jane lands a job as an assistant to the no-nonsense Gray Chandler Murray at a retail company and must balance high school with high-end fashion.

9. Alcatraz (Fox)

Someone has finally re-opened Hell’s Gates! Officer Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones) and Dr. Diego Soto (Jorge Garcia), the world's foremost Alcatraz expert, investigate the reappearance of prisoners and guards who mysteriously disappeared from the famous prison decades ago. The drama comes from Lost and Fringe mastermind J.J. Abrams, who obviously knows a thing or two about getting people off an island.

8. House of Lies (Showtime)

Based on the tell-all book, How Management Consultants Steal Your Watch and Tell You the Time, the show marks the TV series debut of Don Cheadle as Marty Kaan, a slick management consultant in the corporate world who doesn't play by the rules. The “Eye Candy” of the show is none other than Kristen Bell (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), a sexy yet edgy political assistant/right hand woman.

7. The Firm (NBC)

NBC hasn’t had luck with dramas shows recently, but that will all change with this show. Based on John Grisham's novel, the series takes place 10 years after the events of the 1993 film with Josh Lucas succeeding Tom Cruise as attorney Mitch McDeere, who starts a new life in Washington, D.C., with wife Abby (Molly Parker). Juliette Lewis and Callum Keith Rennie co-star as Mitch's receptionist and brother who have been hooking up.

6. I Just Want My Pants Back (MTV)

What a show on MTV that doesn’t have to do with teen pregnancy?....let’s check it out. Based on a novel of the same name, MTV has finally come up with a 20 something year old version of How I Met Your Mother. Jason Strider, is a 20-something college grad partying and hooking up in New York until a one-night stand steals his pants, setting him off on a quest to get his pants and the girl back. They previewed the first episode after the 2011 MTV Music Awards and if you ever visited your local clinic or woke up with a hangover you will love this show.

5. Smash (NBC)

NBC gives us this musical drama (starring Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston and Katharine McPhee) from Steven Spielberg set under the high-stakes lights of Broadway as a group of lyricists, producers and actors try to put together a musical about Marilyn Monroe — complete with original songs.

4. Lost Girl (Syfy)

Meet Bo, a bisexual woman who learns she's actually a succubus (a demon who feeds off people's sexual energy) when she accidentally "drains" her boyfriend to death. Forgoing her supernatural Fae clan, Bo hits the road and forms a Fae/Human detective agency with Kenzi as she tries to help humans and learn more about her origins. A lesbian who feeds off of sexual energy….need we say more?

3. Luck (HBO)

Set in the gritty world of horse racing, the drama looks at the sport from all sides. The owners, gamblers, jockeys, industry players and even the underbelly of organized crime, this show covers it all. Like any good racehorse, Luck is brimming with top-notch pedigree: Michael Mann and David Milch are behind it, and Dustin Hoffman heads an all-star cast that includes Dennis Farina, Nick Nolte, Richard Kind, Joan Allen and Michael Gambon.

2. Dallas (TNT)

The original Dallas aired from 1978 to 1991 and centered on the Ewing family, a cattle and oil dynasty occupying the expansive Southfork Ranch in Texas. The new version will focus on the Ewing offspring — J.R. Ewing’s son John Ross (Josh Henderson of Desperate Housewives), and Christopher, the adopted son of Bobby and Pam Ewing (Jesse Metcalfe of Desperate Housewives) — as they clash over the family dynasty’s future. Jordana Brewster (Fast & Furious) stars as Elena, who is involved in a love triangle with Christopher and John Ross. Julie Gonzalo (Veronica Mars) stars as Christopher’s fiancée Rebecca. The updated Dallas will feature original series stars Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray. Hagman gained worldwide fame for his portrayal of oil baron J.R. Ewing. Gray played J.R.’s wife Sue Ellen Ewing, while Duffy portrayed J.R.’s younger brother Bobby.

1. Are you there, Chelsea? (NBC)

The original title for the show was “Are you there Vodka, It’s Chelsea”, but even with the name change expect a lot of vodka on this show. Based on the Chelsea Handler best-selling book, Chelsea is a 20-something year old head bartender and some would say a professional alcoholic. Many have deemed this show as the next “Cheers”, but I don’t think this the place where you want everyone to know your name. Author Chelsea Handler also makes guest appearances on the show as the pregnant older sister. Watch out for breakout star Jo Koy as he steals the show.
