PANDORA REVEALS HOW MUCH IT PAYS ARTISTS

With digital music provider Rdio recently revealing that they will be paying $10 to musicians per fan on their site, music recommendation service Pandora Radio has gone on to reveal the amount of money certain artists have collected from them in light of critics’ claims that musicians make little to no money from music-streaming services. Sharing that some artists have received upwards of $3 million annually, Pandora founder Tim Westergren released a statement detailing dividends for artists.

For over two thousand artists Pandora will pay over $10,000 dollars each over the next 12 months (including one of my favorites, the late jazz pianist Oscar Peterson), and for more than 800 we'll pay over $50,000, more than the income of the average American household. For top earners like Coldplay, Adele, Wiz Khalifa, Jason Aldean and others Pandora is already paying over $1 million each. Drake and Lil Wayne are fast approaching a $3 million annual rate each.

Last month, Pandora rallied supporters around the Internet Radio Fairness Act, a bill introduced to the U.S. Congress which would lower the royalties music-streaming services pay, down to those comparable to satellite radio.

It's hard to look at these numbers and not see that internet radio presents an incredible opportunity to build a better future for artists. Not only is it bringing tens of millions of listeners back to music, across hundreds of genres, but it is also enabling musicians to earn a living. It's also hard to look at these numbers, knowing Pandora accounts for just 6.5% of radio listening in the U.S., and not come away thinking something is wrong.

Pandora was founded on the principle of supporting artists and we're proud to pay performance fees. We think artists could and should ultimately earn even more.

Westergren also went on to describe the impact the bill might have on radio and musicians, sharing:

Making performance fees fair for internet radio will drive massive investment in the space, accelerating the growth of the overall sector, and just as importantly accelerating the development of new technology that leverages the incredible power of the internet to build and activate new audiences. That’s where the great opportunity lies in the long run. The short-term reduction in revenue would be rapidly swamped by the overall growth of the sector. Imagine the impact on artists if this industry grew to become 25% or even 50% of radio listening.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH SAYS THOR 2 WILL BE MORE REALISTIC!

In between his busy schedule of filming "Thor: The Dark World", Chris Hemsworth took some time to discuss what to expect from the second God of Thunder movie. Speaking to Hong Kong's Prestige, the Australian hunk dished on how new director Alan Taylor affected the tone of the sequel. Chris admitted that he couldn't be happier to work with the "Game of Thrones" helmer for "Thor 2". He gushed, "I love the way he adds an incredibly organic element to the fantastical world of Thrones, and I think that's what Thor could benefit from." Thanks to Alan, Chris said that the "Thor" sequel would be more realistic than the first film. "It's grounded in reality, no matter how mythical or science-fiction-like it becomes," he explained. "There's a truth to it all. Certainly, working with him now, you can see he doesn't want Thor or the Asgardians to seem like some distant race or god-like. He still wants them to be relatable." During the chat, the husband of Elsa Pataky weighed in on his rivalry with brother Liam Hemsworth, who apparently also auditioned for the part of Thor. "It was never at the same time and, to be honest, we've auditioned for a lot of different things and a lot of the same parts over the years," he recalled. "That [time] was strange because it came right down to the wire. I was no longer involved in the audition process - I was set aside. It was Liam or a couple of other guys who were going to get it, so I was helping him run through the stuff. Then I got a call, and suddenly I was back in it and Liam was helping me! So it was a bit of a team effort." Chris admitted that he and Liam as well as brother Luke Hemsworth never had any tough competition as fellow actors. "No, we have a healthily competitive relationship in everything - as brothers do," he claimed. "Whereas with [acting], all three of us are so aware of the instability of it all and how much is up to chance," he continued. "It's far more of a supportive relationship [we have in acting] than backyard football, or surfing, or whatever else we do in our free time." Chris will reprise his role as Thor in the sequel which is projected to arrive in the U.S. cinemas on November 8, 2013. He will be joined by Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Kat Dennings, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard, Zachary Levi, Ray Stevenson, Jaimie Alexander and Christopher Eccleston.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY FINDS A SCREENWRITER IN KELLY MARCEL!

The writer who will provide "Fifty Shades of Grey" script has officially been hired. Universal Pictures and Focus Features confirm that Kelly Marcel is set to serve as the screenwriter for the highly-anticipated film adaptation of the E.L. James bestselling steamy novel. Upon announcing the news, producer Michael De Luca says, "Kelly's work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor and depth of character which is particularly visible in the celebrated screenplay for the upcoming 'Saving Mr. Banks'." Agreeing with his producing partner's opinion, Dana Brunetti adds, "We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelly's engagement with the characters and world E L James has created and we knew she was the right person to augment our 'Fifty Shades' family." Marcel herself wrote "Saving Mr. Banks" script, which appeared on 2011 Black List. She also served as the co-creator and executive producer for Amblin/FOX's "Terra Nova". Her other upcoming project is producing "The Madonnas of Echo Park" for HBO. "Fifty Shades of Grey" has become one of the most-talked-about movie projects since it was first announced earlier this year. While the film still hasn't secured its director, fans have been massively speculating on who are going to play lead couple Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. The story of the bestselling book itself follows the S&M relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian and college student Ana. Their relationship deepens in the book's sequels, "Fifty Shades Darker" and "Fifty Shades Freed". The first book is included in the New York Times bestseller list.
