MATT LEINART SIGNS WITH HOUSTON TEXANS!

Former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart has agreed to one-year contract with the Houston Texans after finding little interest from the rest of the NFL's 31 teams.

Leinart will become the Texans' third quarterback behind starter Matt Schaub and backup Dan Orlovsky, who will remain the No. 2 at least until Leinart has some command of Houston's offensive scheme, sources said.

The Texans cut John David Booty, another former USC quarterback, when they trimmed their roster to the mandatory 53 limit on Saturday, leaving Schaub and Orlovsky as the two quarterbacks. Orlovsky threw two interceptions against the Buccaneers in the final preseason game but coach Gary Kubiak otherwise described the Texans' backup as having a "strong" training camp.

Leinart will be working with some of the NFL's best receiving talent, including All-Pro Andre Johnson. Leinart, who was released Saturday, also had great receivers in Arizona, led by All-Pro Larry Fitzgerald.

Leinart's financial terms for 2010 were not immediately available.

The Cardinals parted ways with the former Heisman Trophy winner days after Leinart went public with his frustration over being replaced by Cleveland castoff Derek Anderson.

Leinart complained he had outplayed Anderson and that his problems with coach Ken Whisenhunt were "probably away from football." That led to a meeting with Whisenhunt the following day. Although he was unhappy that Leinart took his issues public, Whisenhunt praised how the quarterback handled things.

"The one thing I want to make very clear is how professional Matt was about the whole situation," the coach said. "I was very impressed with his conversation with me. He thanked the organization, the ownership, for all the time and effort that they had invested in him. He felt like he had gotten better and he had learned a lot and it meant a lot to me to hear him say that."

Arizona thought it had a steal when Leinart, who led Southern California to two national championships and a third title game appearance, fell to the Cardinals at the No. 10 overall pick in 2006. He started 11 games as a rookie under then-coach Dennis Green, then the first five the following season under new coach Ken Whisenhunt. But the big left-hander went down with a broken collarbone and Kurt Warner took over.

Warner finished his career with two spectacular seasons, leading Arizona to consecutive NFC West titles, an incredible run to the Super Bowl and a 51-45 overtime victory over Green Bay in a playoff thriller last season.

Leinart threw for 3,893 yards with 14 touchdowns and 20 interceptions with Arizona.

MAURICE CLARETT SIGNS A 1-YEAR DEAL TO PLAY IN THE UFL

Wearing the same No. 13 he wore so well as an Ohio State freshman eight years ago, Maurice Clarett began his bid to return to football Monday night on a high school field where the minor-league Omaha Nighthawks practiced before a handful of onlookers.

Clarett signed a one-year contract with the United Football League team earlier in the day after meeting with team officials and UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue, who gave his blessing.

Clarett, who is not scheduled to meet with reporters until Wednesday, went through a private workout and physical Sunday. The Nighthawks list him at 6-foot and 220 pounds, 10 lighter than his playing weight at Ohio State.

"The things you can't coach you can see were there -- footwork, hands, those types of things. And he's in really good physical condition," general manager Rick Mueller said. "Those were the things that jumped out more than anything else. He's done a pretty good job getting himself in condition to play football."

Clarett, 26, needed a judge's permission to leave Ohio to work out for the Nighthawks. He was allowed to be out of state for 30 days. Mueller said he's confident Clarett will be allowed to stay the entire season in Omaha and that he won't be barred from traveling to road games.

Clarett ran into trouble after that sensational freshman year at Ohio State, where he rushed for 1,237 yards and 18 touchdowns, the last one clinching a victory in the national title game against Miami.

He was suspended the entire 2003 season for taking gifts and lying to the NCAA. He later lost a court case challenging the NFL's rule requiring a player to be out of high school three years before becoming eligible for the draft.

The Broncos drafted Clarett in the third round in 2005, but he was hindered by a groin problem, never played in a preseason game and was cut before the regular season.

His downward spiral continued with the robbery, which landed him in prison and then, for the last 4½ months, in a community-based lockdown dormitory.

"I was as skeptical as anyone when we first started talking about Maurice," Mueller. said. "Once you do the research and you dig in and spend time with him, you realize he has his head on straight. He made his mistakes, he acknowledges that. He deserves an opportunity to show people he's changed.

"I'm 100-percent comfortable that Maurice is not going to do anything to hurt this football team or city."

Huygue had said that he wouldn't allow Clarett to sign with the Nighthawks unless the team provided a strong support system. Ahman Green, a native of Omaha and four-time Pro Bowler with the Green Bay Packers, has agreed to serve as Clarett's mentor.

"He's a grown man. He paid his debt to society. Right now he just wants to play," Green said.

The Nighthawks practiced in shorts, helmets and shoulder pads, and Clarett walked through a few plays at the start. When he stepped the wrong direction on a play, defensive tackle Hollis Thomas bellowed, "Hey, new guy!"

Clarett went through station drills with the running backs, then watched from the sideline with his helmet off as the team ran seven-on-seven plays. He spent much of his down time with wide receiver Roy Hall, an Ohio State classmate and friend of Clarett who also signed Monday.

Hall played coy when it was suggested that the Nighthawks signed him to be part of a support system for Clarett.

"I don't believe in coincidences," Hall said wryly.

Clarett and Hall have been working out together for about seven weeks at Ohio State, since Hall was released by the New Orleans Saints.

"He's a good friend of mine," Hall said. "Going through the ups and downs with him early, and watching what happened, it was exciting for me to be able to help him and embrace him. We're brothers, and we preach that."

Clarett plays in a league where the average salary is $50,000. Besides Green, the Nighthawks feature Pro Bowl quarterback Jeff Garcia and several other players with NFL experience.

"We're going to be patient with him," Mueller said of Clarett. "We have to be smart about it and so does Maurice. This kid is anxious to get out there and show what he can do, but it's no good if he's hurt.

"He's done everything he can personally, legally and physically to put himself in condition to be successful. Now we have to find out if he can get back."

RYAN REYNOLDS SIGNS ON TO CO-STAR W/ DENZEL WASHINGTON IN SAFE HOUSE

slice_ryan_reynolds_denzel_washington

Ryan Reynolds as been cast opposite Denzel Washington in the upcoming thriller Safe House.  As we reported last week, Reynolds was the front-runner on a short list of actors jockeying for the highly-contested role.  Other stars considered for the part included Sam Worthington, Shia LaBeouf, and Zac Efron.  Per Deadline, “The film centers on a young CIA agent (Reynolds) who must transport a dangerous criminal (Washington) to safety after both are attacked at a safe house.”  Basically, it sounds like 3:10 to Yuma, but Vulture described it as Three Days of the Condor crossed with Collateral.  Daniel Espinosa will direct from a script by David Guggenheim.

Hit the jump for how Safe House is fitting in to Reynolds’ busy schedule.

Reynolds recently wrapped filming on Green Lantern and is set to begin shooting in October on the comedy The Change-Up with Jason Bateman.  If Reynolds’ deal for Safe House goes through, then he’ll shoot that film in early 2011.  From there, it’s unknown whether he’ll do Deadpool orRIPD.  Deadline says Reynolds wants to make both so one will follow the other.  Reynolds is also going to be doing heavy promotion in the summer for Green Lantern, which comes out on June 17, 2011.

Book to watch: S.H.I.E.L.D

In our efforts to highlight the best comic books you might not be reading, meet “Book to Watch”.

Now, yes, I know that a lot of people know what S.H.I.E.L.D is: that’s Nick Fury’s organization! Right? Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D? Spies, espionage, women in skin tight cat suits sneaking into underwater/above land bases to find some weapon of mass destruction? Well then, you would be right and wrong at the same time. This is not the movie theater version of S.H.I.E.L.D, this is not the S.H.I.E.L.D you know…and that’s a damn good thing.

S.H.I.E.L.D is an organization that protects the world; we know this. But did you know that they have been defending the world since the days of ancient Egypt? Did you know Leonardo Da Vinci is a member of S.H.I.E.L.D? Yes, I just said that. Ok, now we’re talking. This reimagining of the Marvel Comic’s super spy organization is brought to you by Jonathan Hickman and Dustin Weaver; Hickman is known for books that cross the line of what a comic should be, with books such as Pax Romana and Red Mass from Mars, not to mention his critically acclaimed The Nightly News. As the writer and a graphic artist, you can clearly see when Hickman is on a book, and his designs go very well with illustrator Dustin Weaver’s epic artwork.  The book shows S.H.I.E.L.D agents through time, from the aforementioned Da Vinci to in the most recent issue seeing history’s own Galileo Galilei take on the eater of worlds, Galactus, way before the Fantastic Four were even a thought. The book is exciting, flips from the old days to a semi modern days of the 1950’s, and shows quite a few familiar names from history and the Marvel Universe (Nostradamus, Tony Stark’s father, etc.).  Plus, just look at those covers….damn….yeah.

If you want to read something epic, something that everyone will be talking about, and if you want to see why “this is not how the world ends”, then you owe it to yourself to get on board! Issues 1-3 are available now, with 3 just dropping last week.  Pick it up; gun toting figures from history always equals fun.

GREEN LIGHT! SALT & BLACK DYNAMITE SEQUELS IN THE WORKS

salt_black_dynamite_slice

It appears (though far from definitively) that we could see sequels for both the Angelina Jolie spy thriller Salt and the blaxploitation spoof Black Dynamite in the near future.  According to 24 Frames, all the creatives behind Salt are all up for round two.  Writer Kurt Wimmer has a few ideas for the continued adventures of Evelyn Salt.  Director Phillip Noyce is on board, though Salt 2 may need to contend with the love story Dirt Music (starring Russell Crowe) and fellow spy thriller Wenceslas Square for a spot on his schedule.  Perhaps most importantly, Jolie reportedly said she was “keen” on the idea.  (Jolie, of course, has her own scheduling issues with Tim Burton’s Maleficent and the Kay Scarpetta franchise on the docket.)  The word on the street is that Sony is waiting to see how Salt performs internationally before it moves forward with a sequel — the film crossed $100 million domestic after four weeks in release.

While promoting the UK release of Black Dynamite, writer/star Michael Jai White revealed that he has started work on a sequel.  Read what he had to say after the jump.

black_dynamite_movie_image_michael_jai_white__1_lWhite spoke with The Mirror (via Film School Rejects), and discussed what he wanted to bring to a sequel.

“Oh, absolutely, I’ve had the idea for Black Dynamite 2 for quite a while now, and it’s gonna start where Black Dynamite left off — there’s lots of things we didn’t get a chance to do in the first one.  You know how Black Dynamite just grows in ridiculousness?  Well, this will be a fitting sequel.”

Black Dynamite was never the type of film that would warrant a mega-wide release, White is encouraged by the devoted fans who have embraced the film,

“It’s got this cult thing going on for sure.  There are theatres in the US that have committed to showing it for an entire year and there are people showing up to screenings in 70s regalia, quoting lines from the movie, which makes us quite proud.  It feels really great to be called Black Dynamite, because that’s something I created.”
