NEW TRAILER: SUCKER PUNCH

slice_sucker_punch_banner_01

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, which stars Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Abbie Cornish, Oscar Isaac, Carla Gugino, and Jon Hamm. The Led Zeppelin music from the footage shown at Comic-Con earlier this year is back, and the clip features a ton of story details that gives everything gravity. Hit the jump to check out the brand new trailer, and more details on Sucker Punch.

Snyder is a polarizing director, but one thing is certain: the man knows how to create visually stunning film. Considering he got his start in music videos, that is no surprise as visuals are usually the only method of story telling in that format. Snyder has a nice catalogue of films already, including 300, Watchmen, and his latest, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.  Everything up to this point has been an adaptation or remake, but Sucker Punch is wholly original, and it looks like a kick in the teeth.

Hot chicks, badass visuals, mechs with bunnies on the front, and giant samurais; if the story that the film hints at is halfway decent, I cannot wait. I know that the film won’t appeal to everyone, but I think those that like what they see are in for a treat.

LEGENDARY FILMS LAUNCHES NEW COMIC COMPANY W/ LEGENDARY COMICS

Legendary Pictures has launched a comic book branch with Legendary Comics.  Veteran comic book editor Bob Schreck will head the company, which will “look to bring the newly-created comic-based IP produced by the venture to other entertainment platforms such as film and television.”  The inaugural project will be released within the first half of 2011, but what makes all of this news very exciting to me is that Neil Gaiman (Sandman), Max Brooks (World War Z), and Frank Miller (300) have already attached themselves to the company.  Given the amount of talent involved, I’m going to be expecting some great things from the Legendary Comics brand.  Hit the jump to check out the full press release.

Legendary Pictures is, in my opinion, one of the best studios out there.  The studio has helped produce some of the coolest, geekiest, and riskiest high budget films for the past couple of years.  Some of their past films include Inception, The Dark Knight, Watchmen, Where the Wild Things Are, Trick r’ Treat, and 300.  They’re also currently developing some exciting upcoming geek friendly projects with Sam Raimi’s World of Warcraft, The Dark Knight Rises, a reboot of Godzilla, an adaptation of Mass Effect, and Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot Superman: The Man of Steel.

Here’s the official press release:

LEGENDARY COMICS LAUNCHES LEADING ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY NAMES VETERAN COMIC BOOK EDITOR, BOB SCHRECK AS EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Division Designed to Publish Original Graphic Novels is Formed

Burbank, CA, November 3, 2010 – Legendary Pictures has appointed veteran comic book editor Bob Schreck to the role of Editor-in-Chief of the newly-formed Legendary Comics, it was announced by Thomas Tull, Legendary’s Chairman and CEO. Schreck joins Legendary Comics from IDW Publishing, and his appointment marks the launch of the new division dedicated to publishing original graphic novels.

Headed by Schreck, Legendary Comics plans to publish four to six graphic novels a year for both digital and traditional print distribution. The books will target Legendary’s well-established and powerful fandom demographic. Schreck begins at Legendary Comics the first week of November, and plans to release the inaugural project within the first half of 2011. He will be working closely with Kathy Vrabeck, President of Legendary Digital, and they will, as warranted, look to bring the newly-created comic-based IP produced by the venture to other entertainment platforms such as film and television.

“Bob is an iconic editor and one of most highly-regarded curators and editors of comic culture in our industry. He is the perfect leader with the right balance of passion and editorial skills to spearhead Legendary Comics,” said Tull. “Legendary Comics is committed to being a new home for groundbreaking artists and the characters and stories they create, in an art form we love.”

“Thomas and the Legendary team have a proven track record of cultivating talent and delivering unparalleled entertainment experiences, and I am looking forward to building Legendary Comics into a world-class label for the best writers and artists we know,” said Schreck.  “We have a real opportunity to deliver hard-hitting characters and exciting, innovative storylines to comic book aficionados.  We are in the fortunate position of already having major support from the community and collaborations lined up with world-class creators.”

Iconic comic creators Neil Gaiman, Max Brooks and Frank Miller are among those who are supportive of Legendary Comics.

Frank Miller stated, “Bob Schreck is a joy to work with. He’s tough but affable, mindful of the publisher’s needs but a happy warrior on the side of the artist. We’ve worked together to mutual satisfaction for years. Legendary has proven its ‘fides all over the movie industry and I expect no less from its publishing arm. With Bob, they’ve made the perfect choice: the man’s a talent magnet.”

“To be attached to a creative engine of this magnitude is as thrilling as it is humbling,” said Max Brooks.

Neil Gaiman added, “I’m thrilled that Legendary is going to be entering the world of comics. I’ve been amazed and delighted by their respect for creators in the movie arena, and it can only be good news for the whole world of pop culture that they are going to be encouraging creators to tell unique, smart stories while creating amazing comics for them.”

Schreck comes to Legendary from IDW Publishing where he most recently served as Senior Editor. Prior to IDW Schreck spent nearly a decade working for DC comics where he started in 1990 after founding the famed Oni Press. He also worked at Dark Horse Comics, and is the recipient of numerous industry awards and acknowledgements.

NBC PICKS CHELSEA HANDLER FOR PRIMETIME MOVIE!

Latenight queen Chelsea Handler is making a move in primetime with a comedy project based on her books, which, in a competitive situation, landed at NBC with a put pilot commitment. The project titled after one of Handler's books, Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea, is described as an autobiographical multi-camera comedy based on Handler’s life in her twenties. It hails from Warner Bros. and Tom Werner's studio-based Werner Entertainment. Dharma & Gregco-creator Dottie Zicklin and Julie Larson, both with UTA, will write the adaptation. They will executive produce the project with CAA-repped Handler, who won't be starring, her producing partner at Borderline Amazing Prods. Tom Brunelle and Werner Entertainment's Werner and Mike Clements. The comedy will be centered on a twentysomething woman named Chelsea who won't have the same profession as comedian/author Handler but will carry a lot of the traits in her character as depicted in Handler's 3 best-selling autobiographical books: My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands, Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea and Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang. The compilations of humorous essays about Handler's everyday life, family, friends and romantic/sexual relationships will also be used as source material for stories in the TV project. Handler, who has hosted Chalsea Lately on NBC's soon-to-be-corporate sibling E! since 2006, recently signed on to star in and produce After Lately, a half-hour semi-scripted comedy for the channel, which will follow the backstage goings at her latenight talk show. She also just landed a juicy role opposite Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy and Chris Pine in the McG-directed feature This Means War. This is Zicklin's second project to sell in a competitive situation this season. She also sold a comedy spec to Fox.

DEMI LOVATO CHECKS INTO A TREATMENT CENTER!

Demi Lovato has entered a treatment center, her rep confirmed to MTV News on Monday (November 1). The singer/actress has left her current tour with the Jonas Brothers to seek treatment.

"Demi Lovato left her tour early this weekend in order to seek medical treatment for emotional and physical issues she has dealt with for some time," her rep said in a statement. "Demi has decided to take personal responsibility for her actions and seek help. She is doing just that."

Lovato is currently in South America on the "Camp Rock" Tour with the JoBros. "[Demi] regrets not being able to finish her tour, but is looking forward to getting back to work in the near future," the statement continued.

According to TMZ, Lovato recently got into a physical altercation with a female on tour with her; that report was not confirmed by Lovato's rep.

On Saturday, the JoBros announced that they couldn't have a Web chat with their fans, tweeting, "Due to tour production issues that require our attention, we won't be able to do the webchat on Cambio today. We can't wait to talk to all our fans again. We love you." It is unclear whether the "tour production issues" were related to Lovato's exit.

Lovato also unexpectedly shut down her Twitter page over the weekend. Soon after, the hashtag #demicomeback was a Twitter trend, according to CNN.

"THE DARK KNIGHT RISES" BATMAN MOVIE TITLE FINALLY REVEALED TO THE WORLD!

Christopher Nolan has been very smart the last few weeks with how he's slowly been teasing out information for the maniacally awaited next installment in the Batman franchise: It's going to shoot this summer! Tom Hardy's gonna play a bad guy! Today, Nolan was nice enough to actually reveal three whole new tidbits about the movie, although even those clues have their own mysteries attached.

The first big takeaway from his interview with Hero Complex's Geoff Boucher is that the film will be called "The Dark Knight Rises." Count us among the people who think it's pretty cool, connecting the new film to the last movie's unresolved Batman-on-the-run ending.

The other big headline-grabbing revelation is that the Riddler won't be the bad guy. Since Nolan had previously eliminated Mr. Freeze as a possible villain, that leaves the Penguin and Catwoman as the most famous baddies left in the Batman universe. (And depending on who you trust, those options may have been rejected too.) As close to a hint as Nolan would offer in his interview with Boucher is "We'll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we'll be introducing some new ones," although Moviehole seems pretty convinced that a love-interest/Catwoman character might be one of those new faces.

But while those first two items will get the most attention, we humbly submit that the most exciting news to come out of today's Nolan Proclamation is that "The Dark Knight Rises" won't be 3-D. Instead, it'll be shot on high-def and IMAX cameras, which are less about visual gimmicks and more about sharpening already superb images. (Our friends who saw "The Dark Knight" in IMAX still won't shut up about how amazing the mid-film car chase sequence was.) Beyond the fact that Nolan wasn't seduced by the dark side of 3-D, the decision is fantastic because it shows that he's a filmmaker with enough clout to tell Warner Bros. "no" to something that would have been sure to add another $300 million or so to the film's grosses. How many blockbuster directors have the stature or integrity to do that?
