What could you do in 24 hours? If you are like the many who take part in the annual 24-hour comic book day, you could make an entire 24 page comic in that time; or at the very least try. Across the US, people gather in schools and comic shops to take part in this all day event, armed with art supplies, computers and plenty of caffeine. If you are Erik Larsen, you do something Herculian.
Don't know who Larsen is? Then you don't know your comics. Erik Larsen is one of the seven original founders of Image Comics, creator of the wildly popular and long running Savage Dragon. A constant throughout all the years of Image's existence, Larsen is one of the pillars of creator owned projects and his latest projects helps show why. Herculian is Larsen's 2010 24-hour comic book; penciled, lettered, inked and colored all in a 24-hour period. The story is a dual piece done in a unique fashion: on one side you have Herculian, a generic superhero fighting fuchsia clad villain Punching Judy. Concurrently, you have two brothers talking about their respective love life failures and triumphs, with their text mirroring the ongoing super fight in a literal way. Not only do you get this 24 page story, you also get a collection of short comics from Larsen himself.
At $4.99, the book is larger than a magazine format and packed with stories you wouldn't normally see in their own books. I was very pleased with this book. Larsen is a master of his craft, and he shows it with his 24-hour entry and a collection of humorous stories that remind you of the comic books of yesterday. Hollywood star Matt Damon has taken aim at U.S. President Barack Obama for failing to fulfil his promises since he was voted into office.
The Bourne Identity actor campaigned heavily for Obama to win the presidential race in 2008, but he admits he now feels let down by his failure to fix America's economy and unemployment levels.
He tells Britain's The Independent On Sunday, "I think he's rolled over to Wall Street completely. The economy has huge problems. We still have all these banks that are too big to fail. They're bigger and making more money than ever. Unemployment at 10 per cent? It's terrible... They had a chance that they don't have any more to stand up for things. They've probably squandered that at this point. They'll probably just make whatever deals they can to try and get elected again."
And Damon, whose mother is a teacher, has also been left unimpressed with Obama's handling of education in the country: "They have to get people who actually know about educating kids in positions of power.
"Now they're trying to get business people to come and manage schools like they're factories. It's not going to work."

JaMarcus Russell — widely regarded as the greatest bust in NFL history — is in danger of losing the $2.4 million mansion he purchased after signing with the Raiders back in 2007 … TMZ has learned. According to documents obtained by TMZ — foreclosure proceedings have begun on the former #1 overall draft pick’s house … after he allegedly failed to pay $195,512.05 in mortgage payments.
Now, if the unemployed QB doesn’t cough up the cash in the next 3 months, the bank will put the home on the auction block.
FYI — Russell famously signed a RIDICULOUS contract worth around $60 mil in 2007 — and then proceeded to only win 7 games in three pathetic seasons while gaining about 400 pounds.
25-year-old Russell was eventually released from the team — and is currently out of professional football.

Rapper Lil Wayne has broken the Guinness World Record for most Facebook likes on a single post in 24 hours — a record only too recently created and briefly held by Oreo.
Yesterday, Oreo attempted to set the record with a post to the brand’s Facebook Wall. The post read, “‘Like’ this post to join Oreo fans around the world in setting a Guinness World Record for most “Likes” to a post in 24 hours. Oreo is the world’s favorite cookie, and with your help, it will be the most ‘Liked.’”
Shortly after that post surfaced, Lil Wayne announced to the world that he was also going after the Guinness World Record for most Facebook likes in 24 hours.
At the end of the 24-hour period, Oreo had 114,619 likes; five hours later, when the rapper’s 24-hour period had expired, his post had 588,243 likes, easily trumping Oreo’s bid for the Guinness World Record. (Though the company was honored for its brief record in a Guinness ceremony this morning.)
Around 16.7 million Facebook users “like” Oreo’s page on the social network; Lil Wayne’s fanbase weighs in at 20 million Facebook users strong. However, the high level of engagement between Weezy and his fans tipped the balance in his favor.
Mazy Kazerooni is Lil Wayne’s digital manager. He told us yesterday that the stunt was intended to show off Lil Wayne’s social media chops. “I want people to think ‘Bieber, Gaga and Lil Wayne.’ The traffic we do is ridiculous and no one really knows,” Kazerooni said.
There’s a valuable lesson in this exercise for social media marketers; although the brand failed to accomplish its goal of holding onto a world record, it did get a ton of brand recognition and positive press along the way. Still, a brand, no matter how delicious, endearing, or ingrained into the American experience, is unlikely to have the Pied Piper-like pull of an internationally known star.
