“I guess change is good for any of us” –Tupac Shakur
The late, great iconic rapper nailed it: change is good for anyone, even your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. In Marvel’s Ultimate universe, change has been erupting all over the place. In recent years, the universe has lost Cyclops, Daredevil, Professor X and Magneto among many more. Well, within the past few months, you can add one more: Peter Parker. Wait, isn’t this a spotlight ON Spider-Man?
Well yes, Spider-man is alive, but Peter perished defending his family. So now, the buzz has been around this new Spider-Man, Miles Morales. The youngster of African American and Puerto Rican descent has caught the comic book world on fire, and not all of it is good. Many are crying foul on how Marvel could do this to such a staple character of the universe (remember, Ultimate universe, not normal Marvel universe). With the month having a slew of new #1’s from DC, Marvel is releasing new #1’s for its Ultimate line. How do the new adventures of Spider-Man pan out?
Thankfully, it all works so far. The issue is more of a set up for the series than a full-blown Spider-Man issue. We get to see Miles and his parents going to sign up for a charter high school, as well as how exactly Miles ended up with these very familiar powers. With a major familiar face thrown in, the story ties it all together nicely, leaving readers clamoring for the next issue.
Brian Michael Bendis created Ultimate Spider-Man, and he is writing the new title as well. From the looks of this issue, he hasn’t messed a step, as capturing the essence of humanity and all its own personal voices is something the writer is notorious for. Art is by Sara Pichelli, an artist I have not heard of in the past, but she does a great job of capturing the emotions etched in each character.
All in all, I think I will stick around on this title, no pun intended. For me, change is a good thing, and if it leads to a great story, then it’s a great thing. I give the book a @@@@ out of 5. Pick it up, and be ready for a new era in web slinging.

The Disney D23 Expo kicked off with a bang this Friday, as many gathered to see what's new with everyone's favorite mouse and company. The pictures above are credit to Disney D23.
The Expo had a feel all its own; and having attended many conventions and expos in the past, I can tell you that is no easy task. From walking into the Anaheim Convention Center, I could tell this was going to be a different kind of a convention, and I am very happy about that.
The exhibit floor had the Disney flare everywhere you could see: from the plethora of Pirates of the Carribean props and costumes on display, to massive ballon pastrieis floating in the air, to a electric soundstage with Disney Channel activites going on, there was something for everyone.
Friday was also the ceremony for the Disney Legends. Here is directly from Disney's press release:
BURBANK, Calif. – June 16, 2011 –Television icon Regis Philbin, Muppets creator Jim Henson, the extraordinary actresses who vocally brought to life many modern-day Disney Princesses including Jodi Benson (Ariel from The Little Mermaid), Paige O’Hara (Belle from Beauty and the Beast), Lea Salonga (singing voices of Jasmine from Aladdin and Mulan from Mulan), Linda Larkin (speaking voice of Jasmine from Aladdin), and Anika Noni Rose (Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog) plus other equally impressive contributors to the Disney legacy will be named and honored as official Disney
Legends during the D23 EXPO at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 19, in the Anaheim Convention Center Arena.
The Disney Legends Awards program is a 24-year tradition of The Walt Disney Company, and the three-day D23 EXPO provides a rare opportunity for the public to be a part of the always touching and memorable presentation. The awards ceremony will kick off the first day of the D23 EXPO, hosted by noted television personality Tom Bergeron (host of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars and America’s Funniest Home Videos), and will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 19, in the Anaheim Convention Center Arena.

Despite 4 new films opening this week, the Apes continued to rise as they took the top spot once again.
According to the Associated Press, Rise of the Planet of the Apes narrowly beat out The Help as it claimed the #1 spot with a reported $27.5 million. The Help came in at #2 with $25.5 million, still being the highest grossing film of the four new releases.
Final Destination's latest outing didn't fair as well as a film from the franchise usually does, bringing in enough to hold the #3 spot with $18.4 million. 30 Minutes or Less, the new buddy comedy with Zombieland's Jesse Eisenberg, failed to hit the comedy mark, as it came in at #5 with $13 million, just behind the #4 film, The Smurfs, which held on with a $13.5 million total for weekend.
The other film that opened this weekend, Glee: The 3D Concert Movie, came in below the top 10, ranking at #11 with a meager $5.7 million.
Top 5 for the Weekend
1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
2. The Help
3. Final Destination 5
4. The Smurfs
5. 30 Minutes or Less
